Currumbin Beach Vikings S.L.S.C

The Currumbin Beach Vikings SLSC holds a unique place in the history of Australian Surf Life Saving with its precarious positioning on “Elephant Rock” – a club formed in 1919 with a small shack positioned on the northern side of the rock formation. Now some 90 years on the club has proudly survived storm and tempest to serve the southern Gold Coast community, producing some of Australia’s finest surf lifesavers who have patrolled continuously every year for the past nine decades, risking their lives and braving treacherous conditions to save others. Countless Queensland and National champions and some of Australia’s greatest lifesavers and Olympians grace the walls of the Vikings, a club crowned Australian champions in 1977, 1998 and 1999. Currumbin’s record to win 14 Australian Patrol Competitions – 10 of them consecutively between 1992 and 2001 is testament to the quality of lifesaver to have worn the famous green and white quartered caps. Currumbin lifesavers will continue to patrol and compete to keep this little stretch of paradise safe for the enjoyment of the surfing public.

Kirra S.L.S.C

Kirra Surf Life Saving Club is the second oldest club in Queensland and owes its beginnings to a tragedy that occured on January 6th, 1916. On that day two friends went swimming on the unpatrolled beach and immediately got into trouble. Sadly one of the friends drowned. The local community acted swiftly and a public meeting was called on January 7th 1916 where it was decided that the Kirra Surf Life Saving Club be formed. The Mission statement for the Kirra SLSC is; "to serve the bathing public of Kirra beach and its surrounding areas by protecting life, preserving safety and preventing incidents by proactive and contemporary lifesaving practices through vigilance and service." The club will celebrate it's 100th Anniversary in 2016.

No matter what your motivation for becoming a lifesaver is, there will always be a personally satisfying challenge ahead. Apart from the benefits of health, fitness, friendship, competition, knowledge, leadership and being able to put something back into the community, there are always lifesaving awards to be gained, with the majority of these awards now nationally recognized. Surf lifesavers start young with Active cadets (13 to 15 years), Active juniors (15 to 18) years and Active seniors (18 and over). The cadets receive on the job training while on patrol, and the Juniors are involved in all areas of lifesaving and are required to perform patrol duties. All lifesavers are encouraged to gain extra awards to improve their skills. Rainbow Bay SLSC offers training courses for those who want to learn to be surf life savers. The minimum requirement to be an "Active" patrolling member is the Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) Bronze Medallion which also provides you with a Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue).
